What to Expect at a Beginner Sewing Workshop

Have you always wanted to learn to sew but aren't sure where to start? Perhaps committing to a nine-week course feels like a big step, or maybe you'd simply like to see if sewing is for you before signing up for regular classes.

That's exactly why I offer my Beginner Learn to Sew in a Day Workshop.

This workshop is designed for complete beginners with little or no sewing experience. It's the perfect introduction to sewing and gives you the opportunity to learn the essential skills in a relaxed, friendly environment. By the end of the day, you'll have gained confidence using your sewing machine and learned a range of techniques that will give you a fantastic foundation for future projects.

Arriving and Getting Set Up

The workshop starts at 1:00 pm, giving everyone time to arrive, settle in and get their sewing machines set up.

You'll be learning on your own sewing machine, which is one of the best ways to build confidence. Every machine is slightly different, so learning on the one you'll be using at home makes practising afterwards much easier.

Once everyone is ready, we'll get straight into learning the basics.

Winding a Bobbin and Threading Your Machine

The first thing we'll cover is how to wind a bobbin correctly.

This may seem like a small task, but it's one of the most important parts of sewing. A properly wound bobbin helps your machine stitch smoothly and prevents many common sewing problems.

Once your bobbin is ready, I'll show you exactly how to thread your sewing machine step by step. Don't worry if it seems confusing at first—we'll take our time, and you'll soon feel much more confident.

We'll also cover how to insert the bobbin correctly, as different sewing machines use different bobbin systems.

Understanding Needles and Fabric

Many beginners don't realise that sewing machine needles come in different sizes and types.

Using the right needle can make a huge difference to the quality of your stitching and helps prevent damage to your fabric.

I'll explain which needles are suitable for different fabrics and show you how to change the needle safely on your sewing machine.

It's a simple skill that every sewist should know.

Learning About the Grainline

Before you begin making any sewing project, it's important to understand the grainline of your fabric.

During the workshop, I'll explain what the grainline is, why it matters, and how to find it.

Understanding this from the beginning will help your future projects hang properly, fit better, and look much more professional.

Getting Comfortable with Your Sewing Machine

Once your machine is threaded and ready to go, it's time for the fun part.

We'll spend some time experimenting with your sewing machine and trying out some of the different stitches it offers.

Every sewing machine has its own selection of stitches, and this is your opportunity to see what they do and when they're useful.

You'll also get used to controlling the speed of your machine, steering the fabric and building confidence behind the needle.

Your First Sewing Exercises

Before moving on to sewing techniques, we'll complete a practice sheet.

You'll sew:

  • Straight lines

  • Circles

  • Squares

These simple exercises are excellent for improving your control and helping you become comfortable guiding fabric through the machine.

Don't worry if your circles aren't perfectly round—everyone starts somewhere! The aim is simply to build confidence and develop your sewing skills.

Learning Different Types of Seams

Once you've mastered the basics, we'll move on to one of the most important parts of sewing—seams.

You'll learn how to sew:

  •  1 cm seam allowance

  • 2 cm seam allowance

  • Curved seams

  • French seams

Understanding different seam types is essential because they're used in almost every sewing project. I'll explain when to use each one and share plenty of tips for achieving neat, professional-looking results.

Inserting a Zip

Many beginners find zips intimidating, but they really don't have to be.

During the workshop, I'll show you how to insert a zip step by step, explaining each stage as we go.

Once you understand the process, you'll realise it's much easier than it first appears.

Learning this technique opens the door to making cushions, bags, skirts, dresses and many other sewing projects.

Sewing a Patch Pocket

Next, you'll learn how to sew a patch pocket.

Patch pockets are one of the most common features you'll find on clothing, aprons, bags and home décor projects.

This exercise helps you practise accurate measuring, folding, pressing and topstitching—all valuable skills that you'll use again and again.

Finishing with an Inverted Pleat

To round off the workshop, we'll finish by learning how to sew an inverted pleat.

Pleats are a fantastic decorative and functional feature used in garments, skirts, dresses and soft furnishings.

It's a brilliant technique to end the day with because it combines many of the skills you've learned throughout the workshop.

A Day Packed with Sewing Skills

By the end of the workshop, you'll have achieved far more than you probably expected.

You'll understand how your sewing machine works, know how to thread it correctly, choose the right needle, identify the grainline, sew different types of seams, insert a zip, create a patch pocket and sew an inverted pleat.

Whether you decide to continue onto my nine-week sewing course or simply enjoy sewing as a hobby, you'll leave with the confidence to keep practising at home.

Most importantly, you'll discover that sewing isn't nearly as complicated as it first seems. Like any new skill, it just takes a little guidance, patience and practice—and that's exactly what this workshop is designed to provide.
