How Our Sewing Courses Work

Looking for beginner sewing classes in Reading, sewing machine classes for adults, or a friendly place to learn to sew?

Our sewing courses are designed to help complete beginners, intermediate sewists, and experienced makers develop their skills in a welcoming and supportive sewing community.

Unlike many sewing courses, our Beginner Sewing Classes and Intermediate Sewing Classes run alongside each other. This creates a friendly, creative environment where everyone can learn, share ideas, and stay inspired.

Once you've completed your course, you're welcome to continue attending and work on your own sewing projects with expert guidance and support whenever you need it.

A Friendly Sewing Community

Our classes include:

  • Complete beginners learning how to use a sewing machine

  • Adult learners returning to sewing after a break

  • Intermediate sewists developing dressmaking and garment construction skills

  • Experienced makers working independently on personal projects

This mix of abilities creates a relaxed, sociable atmosphere where you'll always feel welcome, whatever stage you're at.

What Will I Work On?

Don't worry if your session includes a mixture of sewing abilities.

You'll always work on the course or project you've signed up for, with individual guidance tailored to your experience level.

How to Join

Getting started couldn't be easier.

Simply choose the class you'd like to attend and book your place online. If the booking system says "Beginners Sewing Course", don't worry — that's just how our system is organised.

Whether you're joining as a complete beginner, an intermediate sewist, or returning to sewing after a break, you'll be welcomed into a friendly group and supported every step of the way.

You'll start working on your own projects from day one, with expert help on hand whenever you need it.

Learn to Sew from Scratch — 9-Week Beginners Course

Whether you've never touched a sewing machine or just want to build proper foundations, this hands-on 9-week course will take you from complete beginner to confident sewist — one skill at a time.

We start at the very beginning. You'll get fully comfortable with your sewing machine — how to thread it up, wind bobbins, set your tension correctly, choose the right needles, and understand grain line. No guessing, no frustration — just clear, practical knowledge that sets you up for everything that follows.

Then I build your skills step by step. You'll learn a range of seams and techniques used in real garment making, including:

  • A variety of seam types

  • Different zip insertions

  • Knife, box, and inverted pleats — both top-stitched and invisibly finished

  • pockets

The course finishes with a project of your choice. You'll select your own pattern, cut it out, and work through the full construction process with guidance every step of the way. By the end, you'll have a finished piece you made yourself — and the skills to keep going.

This course is perfect for you if:

  • You're a complete beginner with little or no experience

  • You want to learn properly, not just muddle through

  • You'd love to make your own clothes, home furnishings, or gifts

    What You'll Need

Please bring your sewing machine, an extension lead, thread, and fabric scissors to each class. Once we begin working on your chosen project, you'll also need to bring the sewing pattern and the fabric required to make it. Don't worry if you're unsure which pattern to choose or what materials you'll need—I will help you select a suitable pattern and advise you on the fabric and everything else you'll need when we get to that stage of the course.
